Hiking Pilgrimages:
Physicality and Accessibility
Both “Mileage/Steps” and “Maps” of walking done each day is noted in the Daily Itinerary.
This is calculated based on the distance of walking from the Starting Point to End Point, of each day. Our Tours make up the minimum mileage required in order to obtain your “Camino” (Certificate) in Santiago de Compostela upon completion.
Walking is spread out throughout the day – and broken up by Mass daily, Lunches daily, and three (3) Check-Points daily. See below for more information about the Check Points.
Beyond the distances of walking, and the locations of the Day Tours, pilgrims with mobility limitations must consider the accessibility and requirements of this pilgrimage. The following provides as many details possible.
WALKING and LAYOUT:
WHAT IS THE LAYOUT OF THE ROADS and WALING PATHS?
Much of the walk will be a combination of different terrains. When walking through Old Towns, there are combinations of cobblestone roads, old buildings, and uneven surfaces everywhere. The dirt paths are a combination of flat, hills, and steep inclines. Keep in mind that this pilgrimage is open to the elements – this can lead to mud or slippery service throughout. Cities like Madrid (where you start) and Santiago de Compostela (where you end) are typical cities. Expect cobblestone and uneven surfaces, but also, many streets are narrow, and due to strict traffic regulations – they are “Pedestrian Only” – and so buses are not permitted.
DOES A “PACE” NEED TO BE KEPT?
Yes – a pace must be kept in order to complete the walking before sundown, but you have the whole day to complete.
The day is broken up with time to rest at Mass daily (often times in the morning at a Church within one of the Towns along the walk, or Father will pick a place along the walk after lunch.) You also have picnic Lunches set up each day, at the half-way point, consisting of Salads, Fruits, Meats, Water, and Sangria.
WHAT IS THE EL CAMINO PASSPORT BOOKLET?
Your Guide will provide each Pilgrim with a Passport Booklet. As you make your way through the Camino – there are check-points where your Booklet will be stamped with a specific ink/logo. This is to confirm you completed a portion of the El Camino Path. Upon arriving in Santiago de Compostela, you will present your fully-stamped Camino Passport Booklet as proof you walked the full path. In return, you will be presented with your Camino Certificate.
*If any stamps are missing – you will not be able to receive your Camino.
WHERE ARE THE CHECK POINTS?
The Bus will meet you at three (3) Check-Points throughout each day. The distances vary, as the path only meets a Main Road at different points each day. It is there you can relax for a little before continuing, check in with your Guide (questions or should you need a med kit), or add/remove things from your Bag.
Your Checked Luggage will be stored underneath the Bus, and transported daily. You will walk each day with your 206 Tours Hiking Bag – and inside you can pack your Magnificat, Water Bottle, and whatever else you choose to bring with you.
WHERE IS OUR GUIDE?
The Guide will be with you from the start each day, but they will walk ahead of the group. This way they are at each Check-Point to make sure everyone makes it through. They are also walking ahead to inform if there is inclement weather ahead etc. They will be around for Mass, and setting up all Lunches.
They are also along the walk with you each day, and they will be readily available if any issues. You also have their Contact Info in your Final Confirmations if you need to contact them.
