We’re excited to introduce our Pilgrim Spotlight Series in which we will share stories and experiences that our Pilgrims have shared with us. In this week’s Pilgrim Spotlight, John Smith recalls his Pilgrimage to Rome. Read all about his experience below.

My wife and I have prayed for the opportunity to travel to Rome to visit Vatican City for decades. When it came time for us to retire, we knew it was finally our time to experience Pilgrimage.

Our Spiritual Director, Fr. Jones, has been a longtime support and friend of our family.
With his guide along our tour, we had the most spiritual experience of our lives. Vatican City was incredible. It was even more outstanding than what the countless photos I had seen and books I had read prepared me for.

What stuck out most to me was how so many people, all speaking different languages from all different corners of the world could be in St. Peter’s Square in a community of excitement and prayer – though we couldn’t communicate with each other, we were all there for the same reasons, and we were connected by the language of our faith.

A Pilgrimage to Rome would not be complete without a Papal Audience. It was here that I felt the most connected to God that I have ever felt. My wife and I listened to His Holiness with tears in our eyes and were again overwhelmed by the vast community of devout Catholics surrounding us.

I pray that all Catholics take any opportunity to make a pilgrimage as it is an experience that will surely change their lives and deepen their faith.

France is an extremely popular travel destination with many famous places to visit, especially their many beautiful Catholic Shrines. Here is our list of the best Shrines in France:

Our Lady of the Rosary of Lourdes

Lourdes, France

In 1858 St. Bernadette first saw the apparitions of Our Lady near the Grotto of Massabielle. Our Lady prayed the Rosary with Bernadette and emphasized God’s love for us and the necessity of the acts of penance for our sinners.
In Lourdes you can celebrate Mass at the Grotto, experience the story of Lourdes via video presentation, drink water from the miraculous spring that has healed many, and even submerge yourself into the healing baths.
This magnificent Shrine also includes a “life-size” Stations of the Cross overlooking the Grotto of Massabielle.  Each year, about 350,000 pilgrims come to worship in this Holy place.

Shrine of Our Lady of Rocamadour

Rocumador, France

This Shrine is also known to be a site of miraculous healing and is comprised of numerous religious structures and chapels, centered around a statue of the Virgin Mary and the tomb of Zaccheus. Zaccheus was an early Christian hermit of Jericho who conversed with Jesus and the husband of St. Veronica’s who famously wiped the face of Jesus as He climbed to Cavalry.

Chapel of the Visitation

Paray Le Monial, France

The Chapel of the Visitation in Paray Le Monial is the site where Jesus exposed His Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the seventeenth century, allowing her to rest on His Heart and to experience the unconditional love for humanity. At this Shrine you can find relics of the beloved Saint beneath a wax figure of her.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartes

Chartres, France

Chartes is home to the massive Cathedral Notre Dame which is a World Heritage site known for its incredible stained-glass windows. Created in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, UNESCO called the Cathedral “the high point of French Gothic art.”

Mont St. Michel

Mont St. Michel. France

This Monastery built in 709 is known for its absolutely breathtaking views as it is surrounded by a magnificent bay which has one of the greatest tidal ranges in all of Europe. The Abbey was consecrated by Aubert, Bishop of Arvanches at the request of Michael the Archangel.

Basilica of St. Therese

Lisieux, France

Lisieux was home to the life of whom Pope Pius X called the “greatest Saint of modern times”, St. Therese. The Basilica of St. Therese is home to beautiful mosaics and stained glass. You can see relics, clothing, and personal objects, and even tour her childhood home and Carmelite Convent where she studied in Lisieux.

Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

Our Lady of Miraculous Medal

In Paris, the Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal holds the incorrupt body of St. Catherine Labourne. St. Catherine’s guardian angel lead her to the chapel where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her and instructed the making and purpose of the Miraculous Medal.
These Shrines of France will not disappoint. Visit France to see the magnificent Holy sites on our tour!

The upcoming month of May is dedicated to The Blessed Virgin Mary. All but the last 4 days of the month fall within the liturgical season of Easter, represented by the color white to symbolize light, joy, purity, and innocence. The last four days of the month (beginning the Monday after Pentecost) are in Ordinary Time which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and provides hope to the faithful of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven. The Holy Father’s intentions for the Month of May are that initiatives which defend and uphold the role of the family may be promoted within society. The world is resplendent with spring’s increased light and new growth. It is Mary’s month and, during the remainder of Easter time, let us endeavor through the prayers of the Holy Liturgy and Holy Rosary to deepen our gratitude for the mystery of our Baptismal rebirth in Christ.

Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith beginning on October 11, 2012, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Vatican II Council, and conclude on November 24, 2013.

On January 12, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith released a note with recommendations for the Year of Faith and at the top of the list they recommend a pilgrimage, “of the faithful to the See of Peterto the Holy Land, the place which first saw the presence of Jesus, the Savior, and Mary, His Mother.” Year of Faith is an occasion for the faithful to understand more profoundly the foundation of the Christian faith.

Come with 206 Tours to The Holy Land, to draw closer to Jesus of Nazareth, and to follow in His footsteps where the Scriptures will come alive as you visit Our Lord’s homeland. Or, if you have already done Holy Land consider joining any one of our other 500 pilgrimages. You will pray, reflect, renew and affirm your faith. You will also be inspired by the natural beauty of the landscapes, in addition to learning about the saints and rich heritage. On a pilgrimage you will  encounter that which has changed the lives of so many pilgrims, an act of faith and prayer. If you want to be a Saint, or if you want to be a holier person, than pilgrimage is for you.  We at 206 Tours believe that a Pilgrimage is a personal invitation from God, comprised of His offer and dependent upon our acceptance.  God’s call may vary but the purpose remains consistent:  It is an individual summons to know God more fully.  A pilgrimage is a spiritual journey to which the pilgrim joyfully responds “yes” to God’s invitation.
During the Year of the Faith, let us all respond to God’s invitation and to Pope Benedict XVI’s recommendation by joining a pilgrimage!
The blessings of the pilgrimage and our encounters with the Lord, Our Lady, the saints are certain to strengthen us throughout life.
May God bless and reward you for all the support and for the efforts you undertake.
Sincerely,
Milanka Lachman
President

They say that the easiest way, or the first step, in becoming comfortable with yourself, is by going to the movies on your own. To some, that seems as one of the most terrifying things to do, or maybe it has never crossed your mind. You think of all the things that we do in everyday life, on our own, like grocery shopping, going to the mall, getting your car washed, or running everyday errands. But the difference that is absorbed by going to see a movie alone as imposed to running an “errand”, is that going to the movies is seen as an extracurricular activity that you would normally spend with friends. When you go to a restaurant, carnival, or a party, it is a time to relax and enjoy the company of others. You go to share stories and create new ones that you will not only talk about with those that went, but share with people you are just meeting for the first time.

In 2012, there are a number of options of things to do. We are all different, and what we see as entertaining may not be seen the same to others. And in a lot of cases, you are always told to “do what makes you happy”. But without that independence and drive to do so on your own, that saying would end with, “provided that someone else is as equally interested, and available”.

There are a number of benefits from traveling by on your own, for an evening, to another country, or on a Pilgrimage. You learn that friends are everywhere. Our regularly scheduled departures are mostly comprised of individuals who come from all over the US, some even as far as Australia. And the one thing that binds them, is to be on a spiritual journey which is led by a Catholic priest and guide.

There are many benefits to traveling with a group where you don’t know anyone:

1)      Some of the best travel experiences our Pilgrims have had were traveling with a group of people where no one knew one another until they got there.
2)      There is an element of “it’s in God’s hands”
3)      Our trips offer one “Introduction Evening”.
4)      There is no fixed seating, so you are always welcome to move around.
5)      Our trips are very active and such trips are best for bonding
6)      The guides are your best source for information.

At the end of the day, after all the letters we receive from those returning, they often cite “meeting different people” is one of the reasons they love travelling. When you leave your home and travel to different countries, it’s what you come back with that is the most important. And that’s being able to tell stories that most can hardly dream, and friends for life that were apart of those stories.

Someone once said, “There are no better values, than family values”. That is something that, not only separates us all, but brings us together at the same time.

There are traditions, experiences, and stories that build us all into the person we become. Life is about all the things that happen to you, and more importantly, how you react to them. But that reaction is innate in all of us from how we were brought up, the stories we heard, the places we have been and more importantly, the people who instilled them in us.
Vacations, while enjoyable, are necessary in every way possible. They keep us healthy by keeping us active and reduce the stress from every day work and life. They keep our minds productive by allowing us to see the world from a different perspective, and to take in all that this world has to offer. From being more productive at work, to holding more stimulating conversations with friends, vacations are imperative. But the one thing we overlook, are the people we spend those vacations with.

It is important to share these moments in your life, with the people who have been there with you your entire life, your family. Values and traditions run from generation to generation, and they all hold an importance for a reason. It’s on vacations where the most popular conversation starter is, “I remember when…”. It’s never the place that you visit, but the stories told that make it important. This coming April will be the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. If you were to take a boat out to the site, you would look around and just see water. But under you? The lives and stories of thousands remain. Most people can trace back someone from their family to that boat, the boats before it, or the Carpathia which came back for those who survived. A family, are the only ones that can take a moment in history, and connect it to you personally.

Like I said, it is important to go on vacations, but it is more important to spend those vacations with the people closest to you. The values of honesty, trust, and integrity cannot be learned from a book. The old saying of, “your word is your bond”, is still one of the most important values to this day. And learning sympathy and compassion for others can only be taught by example.

So lead by example, and experience a vacation with your family that will hopefully inspire a new value in them.

About Ireland & the International Eucharistic Congress:

Ireland
is the third-largest island in Europe and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. Long known as the “Isle of Saints and Scholars”, Ireland was the epicenter of Christian learning while the rest of Europe was in the Dark Ages. As the home of Saints Patrick, Bridget, Columba, and many more, Ireland also provides many faith-based attractions- from the Book of Kells, an elaborately scripted 9th-century version of the Four Gospels, to the Knock Shrine, a leading Marian pilgrimage site, to historic abbeys, cathedrals, churches, and high crosses.

Pope Benedict XVI announced that the 50th International Eucharistic Congress will be held in Dublin in June 2012. This will mark the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marks an important moment of renewal and deepening of the Church’s teaching and of her understanding as the Body of Christ and the People of God.

A Eucharistic Congress is an international gathering of people which aims to:
♣ promote awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church

♣ help improve understanding and celebration of the Liturgy

♣ draw attention to the social dimension of the Eucharist
The Congress normally takes place every four years. The daily celebration of the Eucharist is at the very heart of the Congress. The wider program includes other liturgical and cultural events, testimonies, and workshops during the week of the Congress. The theme for the Eucharistic Congress is “The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and with one another.”

The hope is that the theme will contribute to an enriched understanding of the Eucharist as true personal Communion with Jesus Christ and to a renewed understanding of the Church. In the Eucharist we are invited to a personal act of encounter with the Lord who gives himself for us, in Word and Sacrament. That encounter opens the path for new relationships in which we, as Church and as individual Christians are invited to engage in a social mission, in which we in turn are given for others.

The Eucharist is bread for the life of the world (Jn 6:51)

You’ve probably heard on the news – lost luggage is the newest hurdle in travel. More luggage is being lost than ever before partially due to understaffed airlines, airports, and transfer organizations.

Let me never suffer the loss of my greatest treasure, eternal life with God. Amen. St. Anthony, helper in all necessities, pray for us.
