Events Calendar for the 2025 Jubilee Year
December 24, 2024 – January 6, 2026
Rome, “the Eternal City”, will soon be flooded with pilgrims to participate in the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year. What is a Jubilee Year? It is a time when the Catholic Church offers the faithful an incredible gift: a plenary indulgence, the complete remission of sins. Jubilee Years typically only take place every 25 years, so they are truly a unique experience. You can learn more about the history of Jubilee Years and the necessary requirements to receive a plenary indulgence by reading: www.206tours.com/blog/pilgrims-of-hope-2025-jubilee-year
The Jubilee Year will begin with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica on December 24, 2024 (Christmas Eve) and will continue until the closing of the door on January 6, 2026 (Feast of the Epiphany). It is estimated that 35 million pilgrims will journey to Rome over the course of the year to share in the special graces which are offered.
As pilgrims prepare to gather from far and wide to participate in this special event, the Vatican is offering a variety of resources to help plan their upcoming visit. During the Jubilee Year, there will be many special events and activities taking place in Rome and Vatican City. There will be Masses, processions, and pilgrimages, as well as opportunities to visit the many shrines and holy sites in the city. There is also much anticipation over the Shroud of Turin which is expected to be on exhibit over the course the Jubilee Year. This is a very special opportunity since the Holy Shroud is typically not on public display due to its fragility. This Shroud is believed to be the same burial cloth used after the Crucifixion of Christ and to this day it bears the visible imprint of a crucified man. Currently, no specific date has yet been announced as to when the Shroud will be displayed. However, the exhibition is likely to happen sometime between May – June 2025. 206 Tours will share updates as they become available.
Another special tradition one can participate in while on pilgrimage to Rome was started by St. Philip Neri in the 16th century. It is called the “Seven Churches Pilgrimage” and involves walking throughout the city and Roman countryside, stopping at seven of Rome’s most magnificent basilicas:
- St. Peter’s Basilica
- Basilica of St. Mary Major
- Basilica of St. John Lateran
- Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls
- Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside the Walls
- Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem
- Basilica of St. Sebastian Outside the Walls
In total, the walk is 25 km (15.5 miles). It is meant to call to mind how Christ went to seven places from the time of his arrest on Holy Thursday until his death on Good Friday. By reflecting on His passion throughout this walking pilgrimage, pilgrims can come to a deeper understanding of the great love God has for them.
The 2025 Jubilee Year is sure to be a memorable and meaningful event for Catholics around the world.
