Altötting Pilgrimage
The Story:
Altötting located in Bavaria, Germany is one of the most celebrated Shrines in the country. The city has been a place of pilgrimages for over 500 years. In 876 King Carolman established a Benedictine monastery and abbey church in honor of St. Philip the Apostle, which was ransacked and burned in 910 by the Hungarians. All was rebuilt in 1227 by Duke Louis I who assigned a provost to head twelve Canons Regular.
Pilgrims celebrate Mass at the center of the pilgrimage complex, the Chapel of Mercy. The Grace chapel is the focal point of this holy town, and the most significant to pilgrims as it houses a 13th century statue of the Blessed Virgin to which numerous miraculous cures are credited. Also see the Golden Horse altarpiece depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus along with young John the Baptist, John the evangelist, and St. Catherine. While there, we have the opportunity to visit the Basilica, the Panorama of the Crucifixion and St. Konrad’s Monastery.
