Day 3: Munich - Altotting - Salzburg
After breakfast we will visit the Marienplatz, the central city square and Frauenkirche (the Church of Our Lady), which serves as the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and is a famous symbol of the city. We will celebrate the beginning of our pilgrimage with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We will leave Munich early through the Bavarian to Altotting. Nicknamed the “Lourdes of Germany,” this city is home to one of Germany’s most celebrated shrines. The 13th-century statue of Our Lady of Altotting is said to have caused numerous miraculous cures and has sparked deep devotion to our Lady in this city. Upon arrival we will celebrate Mass at the home of this statue, the Chapel of Mercy. Next, we will admire the understandably famous Panorama of the Crucifixion – a circular painting more than 300 feet long and 30 feet high depicting Jerusalem and the Crucifixion. While in Altotting, we will also have the opportunity to visit the basilica and St. Konrad’s Monastery. Continue on to Salzburg for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4: Salzburg – Silent Night Chapel - Salzburg
Following breakfast we will visit the Silent Night Chapel, commemorating the brief Christmas Day peace that took place during World War I. The chapel was built on the site of the former Nikolauskirche, where the Christmas carol was first performed on Christmas Eve in 1818. The Nikolauskirche was damaged by floods in the 1890s and was eventually demolished in 1913. The Silent Night Chapel was built on the site in 1937. Return to Salzburg for a free afternoon to explore the magical Christmas markets : Salzburg Christkindlmarkt & Hellbrunner Adventzauber . Dinner and overnight and dinner.
Day 5: Exploring Salzburg
Our day in Salzburg starts with a nourishing breakfast, after which we attend Mass at the ancient St. Peter’s Abbey, a spiritual center that has served the faithful for over a millennium. Following Mass, we immerse ourselves in the city’s history with a walking tour of the heart of Salzburg. Narrow streets and secluded passageways whisper tales of its medieval roots, while the grandeur of the Archbishop’s Residence at DomPlatz speaks to the Catholic Church’s enduring influence. The gardens of Mirabell Palace, a setting made famous by “The Sound of Music,” offer a tranquil space for prayer and reflection. The grandeur of the Romanesque Cathedral and the serenity of the Nonnberg Convent of Benedictine nuns further inspire our faith. Mozart’s birthplace beckons us with its cultural significance, and the gardens and hidden trick fountains of Hellbrunn Palace provide a delightfully unexpected close to our day. As we gather for dinner, we share our experiences, impressions, and the ways in which our journey is touching our hearts.
Day 6: Salzburg – Untersberg – Hallstatt – Salzburg
As we depart from Salzburg after breakfast, we travel to Untersberg. We will take the Untersbergbahn , which is a modern cable car that will take us to the summit of the Untersberg mountain. The cable car ride offers stunning panoramic views of the Salzburg region, the Berchtesgaden Alps, and on a clear day, even the Salzkammergut lakes and the Chiemsee. Continue to Hallstatt, a most charming lakeside village in Austria. This picturesque town is renowned for its stunning scenery, rich history, and unique cultural heritage. Hallstatt is part of the Hallstatt-Dachstein and Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape, recognized by UNESCO for its cultural and natural significance.
Day 7: Salzburg – Munich – USA
Today we depart to Munich airport for our flights home.
